By: Greg Murphy

Choosing to make custom cabinets will give the largest varieties of wood types but you will have to pay further for them. Selecting the type of wood to be applied is as important as the total expression of the cabinets. The category of wood you will choose will count on whether you are buying RTA (ready-to-assemble) stock, semi-custom or custom cabinets. Here are a couple of wood varieties that you may come across while searching for kitchen cabinets.

First one is the Pine wood type. Pine can be white, yellow or ponderosa. White pine is white (apparently) to straw colored. It is not very dense, totally grained and it takes stain and paint appropriately. Yellow pine is quite identical in characteristics with the white pine. Meanwhile, ponderosa pine has yellowish sapwood and needs special surface preparation in order for it to take stain and paint magnificently.

Next is the Paint Grade. Paint grades can be generally Birch, Poplar, Maple or Sycamore. This wood category can comprise of a broad assortment of wood sorts. Many stock and semi-custom cabinet companies that use a painted finish may even use Particleboard rather than wood. The most regular Paint Grade wood varieties are Birch Poplar or Maple.

Another wood category is Mahogany. Several mahogany comes from rain forests found on the western coast of Africa. This variety of wood is reddish-brown in color and its grain is interlocked but can be straight. It has a medium density but it is not that strong. in addition to this, it can take stain and polishing extremely suitably.

Next is Walnut. Walnuts have many species. One is American Walnut which can be found throughout North America to South America. The heartwood is dark and gets darker and darker as it ages. It is very much straight grained but at times can be wavy. It has a medium density but it is quite strong. It also takes finishing really magnificently. Another variety of Walnut is the European Walnut which is fairly parallel in features but its wood is more gray-brown in color and has a pronounced wavy grain.

With all the things going on about becoming eco-friendly, more cabinets nowadays are being made using Bamboo. Bamboo is a hearty plant that grows rapidly, this is why it is much more eco-friendly in comparison to taking advantage of other wood types. The disadvantage of taking advantage of bamboo is that it demands to be veneered above another wood. This is because bamboo plants do not develop thick enough to be cut into planks. Currently, you can only discover Bamboo being used by custom shops mainly on the West Coast.

There is a broad category of wood types to choose from and selecting which wood type will hold up to the amount of use and abuse will be just as significant as how the finished product will look. Always keep this in mind when determining and shopping for cabinets.
